The Girl I Left Behind Me (Advanced)

The Girl I Left Behind Me has a very interesting provenance. The tune is possibly an English folk song dating back to the 1500’s but other conflicting sources states it wasn’t written until 1758 when a pair of English Admirals were observing the French Fleet. To further confuse the issue, the first published sheet music appears in Dublin, Ireland in 1791 leading some to think of the tune as having Irish origin. No matter the true origin, the song has had a long history in the United States most notably as a song of the Civil War. The arrangement here is a very ornamented contest style melody using crosspicking, floating, double stops, harmonics, melody displacement and a good few added chords to spice things up. If you’re a fan of my advanced arrangements this one might be comparable to my advanced Angeline The Baker from years past.
